How to pick the best spikes for high school sprinters
The best sprint spike is the one that fits snugly, has a stiff sprint plate for the 100m to 400m, and is legal for your meets. A newer model can help a little, but most time drops in high school come from training, starts and racing, not the shoe.

Sprint vs mid-distance spikes
Sprint spikes have a stiffer, more aggressive plate and little heel cushion, built for the 100m to 400m. Mid-distance spikes add cushion for the 800m to 1600m. A 400m runner can wear either, and many prefer a sprint spike.
Fit
Spikes should fit tighter than trainers with no heel slip. Try them on with thin socks and jog in them before your first race.
Pins and rules
Many high school meets and tracks limit pin length and type. Check your state association rules and the meet information before race day (NFHS).
Budget
A mid-priced sprint spike from any major brand is enough for most high school athletes. Spend on a premium pair once your marks are close to college standards and every hundredth counts.
