NCAA track and field recruiting rules for high schoolers
You can email college coaches at any age, but NCAA Division I and II rules limit when coaches can start contact with you, which for most sports begins in the summer after sophomore year. Rules change, so confirm the exact dates in the NCAA's current recruiting guide.

Contact you start vs contact they start
The rules limit what coaches can start, not what you can send. Athletes and parents can email coaches, fill out questionnaires and go to camps at any time, which is why reaching out early is allowed and smart.
What changes by division
Division I has the strictest calendar for calls, texts, visits and in-person contact. Division II is similar with a few more allowances. Division III and the NAIA have far fewer restrictions on contact.
Eligibility
To compete at NCAA D1 or D2 you need to be certified by the NCAA Eligibility Center for academics and amateurism. NAIA athletes register with PlayNAIA. Register before your senior year so visits and offers aren't delayed.
Common questions
Can I email a D1 coach as a freshman?
Yes. You can email any coach at any time. The limits are on when the coach can reach out to you first.
What is an official visit?
A visit paid for by the college. The number and timing are limited by division rules.
Where do I find the exact dates?
In the NCAA's current recruiting resources (ncaa.org), which list the calendar by sport and division.
