Shot put and discus throwing standards for college

Quick answer

At a typical NCAA D1 program, the Walk-On mark is about 40'3" (12.27m) in the men's shot put and 37'4" (11.38m) in the women's. High school boys throw a lighter shot (12 lb) and discus (1.6 kg) than college men (16 lb and 2 kg), so their marks read longer than the college equivalent.

Implement weights

Girls throw the same 4 kg shot and 1 kg discus in high school and college, so their marks compare directly. Boys move up from a 12 lb shot and 1.6 kg discus to a 16 lb shot and 2 kg discus, and coaches account for that when they read high school marks.

Common questions

Do college coaches convert high school boys' throws?

There is no exact conversion, so coaches judge high school marks against high school lists and look at technique and strength.

Do hammer and javelin matter for recruiting?

Yes, and many throwers learn them in college. See the D1 hammer and D1 javelin standards.
